Sending email from a Bellsouth Account

I often run into church users who bring their own laptops to the office. Occasionally they ask why they are not able to send mail using their personal accounts. My typical response is that ISPs like Bellsouth don't allow clients to send mail when not on a Bellsouth network.

Depending on the person, I will sometimes add the ability to use the church SMTP server or setup a Gmail account and send mail through the Gmail SMTP. I was researching a different sending problem and came across a blog that mentioned how a Bellsouth or AT&T email account users may send mail when not on a Bellsouth network. Apparently Bellsouth supports SSL authentication for accounts outside their network. I listed the account information below.

smtp fmailhost.isp.att.net, SSL, port 465
pop3 fpostoffice.isp.att.net, SSL, port 995
Use the full email address as the user name.
johndoe@bellsouth.net
 
Click More settings to make sure "requires secure authentication" is checked and set the SSL on the advanced tab.
