I diagnosed a distribution group issue today that has a fairly easy fix. If your distribution group does not receive external mail, open the Exchange Management Console, expand recipient configuration, select distribution group. Open the properties of the distribution group, select mail flow settings, select message delivery restrictions.
Select properties, ensure the accept mail from all senders is checked (unless you want a specific list), uncheck require that all senders are authenticated.
Send a test message from an outside account. Your mail from outside accounts to the distribution group should flow without issue.
Note that the security on the distribution group exists for a reason. If someone spams your dg, everyone in the dg will get spammed. The issue also includes disgruntled customers, coworkers, and various other pesky pranksters. By default, dgs tend to be used internally for communication, not as an external resource.
